Sports drinks, also known as electrolyte drinks, are functional beverages designed to help athletes replace water, electrolytes, and energy before, during, and especially after training or competition. While many are non-caffeinated, some formulations (e.g., certain versions of Powerade) may contain caffeine. They are classified primarily by osmolarity into hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic types, with most commercial varieties being approximately isotonic. Despite their widespread use, evidence on their efficacy for sports performance has been limited, and consumption in excess or when unnecessary may negatively affect health.

The first widely recognized sports drink, Gatorade, was developed in the United States in 1965 at the University of Florida. Since then, the sports drink market has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry, with rapid expansion particularly between 2004 and 2009. (Note: Lipovitan D, introduced in Japan in 1961, is an energy drink, not a sports drink, and should not be conflated with the sports drink category.)
Historically, athletes in the 19th and early 20th centuries sometimes consumed low-alcohol beer for rehydration, as boiled water in brewing was safer than unknown water sources. However, even low ethanol doses were found to impair endurance and psychomotor skills. During the early 1900s, fluid intake during exercise was often discouraged, but research in exercise physiology, including A.V. Hill's 1923 cardiovascular model of thermoregulation, contributed to understanding heat regulation during exercise, though it did not specifically emphasize fluid consumption.
Controversy surrounds sports drinks: a 2012 investigative report found limited evidence for their performance benefits, and a 2021 systematic review indicated that hypotonic carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions with lower sugar and low-to-moderate sodium are most effective for maintaining hydration during continuous exercise. Additionally, dairy milk has been suggested as a comparable or superior recovery option in a 2019 meta-review.
